Seven days of winter check-ins: a plan to try with friends
This is a first week of keeping each other company, not seven days to fix how you feel. Try it in a private group chat, or use Light Club’s daily activities alongside your own group chat. Each person can adapt a prompt, skip it, or simply say hello.
Before you begin: choose the people and the window
Ask a couple of friends whether they would like a little regular contact through winter. Agree when a message is welcome, what stays private, and that nobody has to explain an absence. If you use Light Club, its activity check-in is before 9 AM London time. Use the app’s actual suggestion or gentler option; the ideas below are optional group-chat prompts, not a selectable in-app programme.
Day 1: a small hello
Send a good morning and say what kind of contact you would appreciate this week. That might be a little encouragement, company for a walk, or messages that do not need a reply. If you are doing an activity, choose something manageable before checking in. You can keep your message short. A quieter member does not owe the group a bigger update.
Days 2 and 3: share something ordinary
Day 2: notice one ordinary thing around you and share it if you want to. It could be the weather, a song, or what you are making for breakfast. It does not have to be a gratitude exercise. Day 3: try a short walk in suitable conditions or a comfortable indoor activity, then say hello afterwards. No photos or proof are required.
Days 4 and 5: make company easier
Day 4: ask whether anyone would like a short call or a plan to meet, without expecting the whole group to join. Day 5: repeat the smallest activity that fitted your week. An unremarkable message still counts as contact. If you use the app, mark the activity after doing it and share any conversation prompt in your own WhatsApp chat. Missing the check-in window does not prevent you from speaking to your friends.
Day 6: leave room for a harder day
Send a message that does not ask someone to perform being okay: ‘Thinking of you. No need to reply.’ Only use this where that kind of contact is welcome. You can take a rest day yourself. The group should not turn into a system for watching who is absent or making assumptions about their wellbeing.
Day 7: decide together
Ask what felt comforting, what felt awkward and whether anyone wants to continue. Keep the parts people valued and change the timing if needed. You have not proved that the group treats seasonal depression or creates a lasting habit. You have tried a small way to stay connected. If someone needs more support, the NHS has information about seasonal affective disorder and routes to care. NHS seasonal affective disorder information and support.
